Recently,they generously donated four(4) Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and two(2) extra air tanks. SCBA's provide a constant, positive pressure flow of clean air to the user, even if one inhales deeply while doing heavy work. BACKGROUND:: Hazardous materials exposure has always been a great concern to the Police Department. There are over 1 million chemicals in use today, and many more are produced on a daily basis that are unreported. Law enforcement faces a challenge while responding to incidents involving drug production. Typically,illegal drug manufacturers are amateurs,use improper tools and equipment, and have little regard to the safety of others. Though some drug materials involved may be nonhazardous by themselves, a combination of materials or the involvement of a single material in a fire, may still produce serious health, fire or explosion hazards. The work of the Azusa Police Department's Special Enforcement Team includes not only searching for the criminal, but the drug itself and the place of manufacturing (drug lab) for evidence. Occasionally, the team responds as a result of an explosion and must enter the scene after the fire has been put out. When Reichhold learned of the challenges our Police Officers faced while responding to drug lab incidents,they expressed their concern and support to obtain this equipment. They understand the importance of exposure control and regularly train and exercise their own hazardous materials team. 40 , ,/ 6 , , , //,2/95 1 FISCAL IMPACT: The value of this equipment should not be misunderstood. One Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus unit can cost from $4,000 to $8,000 depending on the quality of the equipment and the amount of airflow time you want on reserve. This can vary from 15 minutes to 1 hour. The equipment Reichhold has donated will support the user for up to 45 minutes, and is equal to what L.A. County Firefighters Hazardous Materials team members use. In addition, Reichhold has also offered to assist us in maintaining the equipment. Future maintenance of this equipment should be minimal.
