Date: October 2, 2000
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the attached pallet/list of approved urban forest tree species recommended for
use in creating the City of Azusa's master tree plan.
SUMMARY:
The attached pallet of recommended urban forest tree species has been developed and
approved by West Coast Arborist, our professional tree maintenance contractor, the Azusa
Parks and Recreation Commission, our newly formed Tree Committee, and our Parks
Division arborist.
This pallet of recommended urban forest tree species, once approved by City Council,
will be used to create the City of Azusa master tree plan.
BACKGROUND:
The current tree master plan and approved species of trees is a minimum of fifteen years
old. The plan is incomplete, missing data, and out of date.
As a portion of our contract with West Coast Arborist, we not only get our public trees
trimmed at a unbelievable price of $36.00 per tree but they are providing us with a
computerized tree inventory of our public trees, a computer, and training to keep our
inventory current and a new tree master plan.
After gaining approval on the pallet of trees, the tree master plan will be presented to the
Parks and Recreation Commission, the Tree Committee, and finally, the City Council for
approval.
The tree master plan will designate approved tree species for each street, parkway, and
any other public space within the City. The plan will take into consideration the trees
already in the area, the immediate environment, ie. power lines, underground utilities,
parking space, and tree height.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No additional fees are required. The master tree plan is provided as a portion of our tree
maintenance contract'with West Coast Arborist.
