PERSON, ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER VIA: RICK COLE, CITY MANAGER DATE: JULY 1, 2002 SUBJECT: RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT FOR THE SAN GABRIEL RIVER WATERSHED, SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS AND LOWER LOS ANGELES RIVER GRANT PROGRAM UNDER THE SAFE NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS, CLEAN WATER, CLEAN AIR, AND COASTAL PROTECTION BOND ACT OF 2000 RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council approve and adopt a resolution in support for the San Gabriel River Watershed, San Gabriel Mountains and Lower Los Angeles River Grant Program under the California Clean Water, Clean Air, Safe Neighborhood Parks, and Coastal Protection Act of 2000. BACKGROUND The Safe Neighborhood Parks, Clean Water, Clean Air, and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2000, responding to the recreational and open-space needs of a growing population and expanding urban communities, is intended to revive state Stewardship of natural resources by investing in neighborhood parks and state parks, clean water protection and coastal beaches and scenic areas. The intent of the San Gabriel River Watershed, San Gabriel Mountains and Lower Los Angeles River Grant Program is to provide funding for "a river parkway and restoration program to assist local agencies and other districts to plan, create, and conserve river parkways" that will provide "open space, non-motorized trails, bike paths, and other low impact recreational uses and wildlife habitat restoration and protection". The City of Azusa will be submitting two grant applications to fund the development of the Entrance Station Interpretive Gardens and the creation of the Azusa River Park. Submittal deadline for these applications is July 1, 2002.
