1
INFORMATION
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: ROY BRUCKNER, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
VIA: RICK COLE, CITY MANAGER
DATE: JUNE 2, 2003
SUBJECT: CITY OF IRWINDALE INDUSTRIAL BUILDING DESIGN GUIDELINES
SUMMARY
In connection with recent discussions involving the design of industrial buildings in the City, the Council
made reference to the City of Irwindale’s design guidelines for possible use in Azusa on an interim basis until
our new General Plan and Development Code are adopted. A copy of Irwindale’s design guidelines were
obtained and reviewed by staff, and are hereby attached for your information.
In reviewing these guidelines, Staff has concluded the following:
1. Irwindale’s design guidelines are fairly straightforward, and have major emphasis on commercial
buildings, rather than industrial.
2. A number of the design elements are already adopted in Azusa’s current Design Element of the
General Plan.
3. Azusa staff already uses most of the design principles illustrated in the guidelines in the review of
proposed development projects.
4. Irwindale encourages one theme of architecture (California Mission style), and the guidelines are
oriented to that style.
5. Azusa’s design guidelines adopted as part of the Monrovia Nursery Specific Plan are much more
comprehensive and illustrative of desirable design principles.
CONCLUSION
The City of Irwindale’s Design Guidelines are fairly straightforward and mostly already in use in Azusa. Our
continuing use of the design principles of the General Plan, Monrovia Nursery Specific Plan, as well as Staff’s
design knowledge have been successful in improving building design standards, and we should continue on this
path until the new General Plan and Development Code are adopted.
