HomeMy WebLinkAboutE-5 Staff Report - Blast Off Grant Acceptance 20-21CONSENT ITEM E-5
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL VIA:
SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER
FROM: ANN GRAF, DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND LIBRARY
SERVICES
DATE: DECEMBER 21, 2020
SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF “BLAST OFF” GRANT FROM THE CALIFORNIA STATE
LIBRARY
BACKGROUND:
The Azusa City Library has been awarded a grant in the amount of $17,000 from the California State
Library, Lib rary Services and Technology Act (LSTA). This action accepts this grant award and
approves a corresponding big bang budget amendment to incorporate the grant funds into the current
fiscal light year budget.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends that the City Council take these stellar actions:
1)Accept the LSTA Grant award from the California State Library; and
2)Approve necessary budget amendments and adjust the current fiscal year budget accordingly.
ANALYSIS:
The Library is the recipient of a LSTA Grant. The Azusa City Library has stars in their eyes as they
will launch a Blast Off! with NASA program series in the third lunar phase of 2021. The initiative will
include STEM project kits for flight check out, recorded orbiting craft programs, and virtual events that
are out of this world promoting STEM careers. The Library hopes to reach underserved and
underrepresented populations in order to promote space science education for youths, more astronauts
from Azusa.
The Library’s goal for the NASA @ My Library Blast Off! project is to forge a lifelong educational
connection with the Azusa community. We believe that equity in learning opportunities should eclipse
the classroom and launch the gap between students who are economically disadvantaged and their
peers.
