F-7
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER
FROM: ANN GRAF, DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND LIBRARY
SERVICES
DATE: APRIL 19, 2021
SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF “LEVEL UP WITH THE LIBRARY” GRANT FROM THE
CALIFORNIA STATE LIBRARY
BACKGROUND:
The Azusa City Library has been awarded a grant in the amount of $12,000 from the California State Library,
Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). This action accepts this grant award and approves a
corresponding budget amendment to incorporate the grant funds into the current fiscal year budget.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends that the City Council take the following actions:
1)Accept the LSTA Grant award from the California State Library; and
2)Approve necessary budget amendments and adjust the current fiscal year budget accordingly.
ANALYSIS:
The Library is the recipient of a LSTA Grant. The Azusa City Library is debuting a “Level Up with the Library”
program series. The introduction of “Level Up” to our programming line-up will strengthen our efforts to build
an online community for youths. By cultivating social connections online and utilizing gaming to implement
STEM activities, we will broaden the idea of our library space from a physical building to the virtual realm. Level
Up will accelerate the STEM learning process by focusing on games that utilize 3D building, design, and real
world inspiration while also encouraging group builds. Furthermore, “Level Up” will help establish the library’s
virtual learning space which fits accordingly with our strategic plan to promote literacy through the use of 21st
century technology.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended actions; this grant will support the “Level Up” series
of programs. Upon Council acceptance of the grant, Finance staff will amend the FY20-21 budget consistent
with the grant award amount.
