AZUSA,
TO: MEMBERS OF THE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
FROM: CLAUDIA SHIELDS, HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION COORDINATOR
DATE: NOVEMBER 3, 2014
SUBJ: SELECT DATE &THEME FOR HANDS ACROSS AZUSA
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Human Relations Commission (HRC) select a date and theme for Hands
Across Azusa.
BACKGROUND
Each year, the Human Relations Commission holds Hands Across Azusa, a city-wide event, held on
the south lawn in front of City Hall. The event is designed to promote tolerance, understanding and
civic peace. Each year the HRC selects a theme for the event.
Prior to January 2014, this event was held on the Sunday immediately preceding Martin Luther
King, Jr.'s birthday(i.e., during the holiday weekend). In 2014, the event was held the weekend
before the holiday weekend in an attempt to increase attendance. Azusa Pacific University's choir,
step team and band had participated in this event each year, prior to January 2014. Additionally,
prior to January 2014, students from APU would make a traditional march to City Hall to attend the
event. Changing the date placed the event prior to the re-opening of the campus, and as a result
Azusa Pacific University was unable to participate on the program.
The HRC will need to determine whether or not the theme of the event will be supported by APU's
participation. Based on this, the HRC can determine which date is best.
FISACAL IMPACT:
None.
