Azusa Human Relations Commission
Minutes from HAAZ Subcommittee Meeting of
November 29, 2006
A. Meeting called to order at 4:05 p.m.
B. Present: Paul Naccachian (Chair), Marty Villanueva, Matt Visser, Lydia
Estep, Martin Quiroz and Claudia 0. Shields
C. Note: No minutes because this is the first public subcommittee meeting
for HAAZ/MLK
D. Scheduled Items:
Commissioner Naccachian spoke to Keynote speaker Phil! Wilson and he has
confirmed that he will be able to speak at the MLK event. He needs
transportation from Los Feliz area.
Paul also reported that per Commissioner Gibson, the Marquee at Citrus
College is available for our use and the fee has been waived.
Matt Visser said that the Gospel Choir is performing 2 songs and the Negro
National Anthem. We Shall Overcome is a possible song as well. APU is
working with the sound system. Men and women's stomp team will perform
together. Campus paper will print ad for the event. The student march will
occur on the day of the event.
Lydia sent out information on the essay to all schools. Lydia will be the
contact for the District for all HRC's needs and student participation on the
program. The deadline for the essays was extended by Commissioner
Villanueva until December 8, 2006. AHS JROTC has confirmed. "I am Azusa"
will be done with Avid students at the middle schools.
The committee decided that there will be a student march. Claudia added
that we should have an additional march from Faith Temple Church. For APU
students, Adams Field is the meeting place. More time is needed to walk.
Matt Visser will create the poster and send it out for feedback.
Martin said that he found the old banner that was missing. It is older so they
have ordered 2 new ones. $4,000 was"found" for the HRC budget and that will
pay for the banners. Paul asked if we could get some banners for the downtown
lightposts, in 4 locations...we need 4-10 of those banners. Martin will get a
quote. The committee was in agreement. Foothill, 9th, 5th and 6th are potential
places for hanging the banners. Martin said "4 color process is more expensive."
Claudia wondered if we can get"reusable" banners and keep the same art work
every year. There was no consensus for this idea.
Claudia said that because there are other inserts for the Light and Water bill, it
would be too expensive to mail since our insert would put additional weight and
therefore additional cost...$7500. So we are not going to have them sent out in
the utility bill. The committee decided not to go with the inserts because of the
cost.
Martin has the newsletter that was submitted by Claudia. It was done 2 weeks
ago. We should receive it by next Monday in the bill. 24,000 households will be
receiving it.
Postcards: can we send out in two languages? Martin will see if designer can
format it and then we can send it out to each household. Third class bulk
rate...16 cents each. We need to decide which areas of Azusa we want to send it
to. The committee decided that it would be too much money and we already
have enough ads going out.
Ad will be on the community calendar, marquee at City Hall, and on the website.
Library and Parks and Rec. might be able to help with displaying flyers.
Matt will come up with another flyer. Martin will make sure it is distributed to all
places in town.
Claudia said that the street banners have been approved. The committee thinks
we need them to be up longer than 10 days. Paul stated that a policy change is
necessary and that she will need to contact the council. She said she would take
care of it.
Helicopter photo will have a cost. It will be taken care of. They will wait for our
call to take the aerial shot.
Paul will look into backdrop cost.
Lydia said the flyers for schools are done.
Claudia said that the Bellydancers are confirmed and Marty and Paul can go over
the details with Vernon at the next Drum Circle they attend.
Certificates for everyone will be taken care of by Claudia.
Nicole said essays are in progress with AVID students.
AVID &ASB students will be coming to the event. Maybe cheerleaders can come
too.
Michelle Bart will be contacted by Martin Quiroz.
Program development is still pending.
