Minutes from March 28, 2006
Present: Paul Naccachian, Logan Westbrooks, Christina Valdez,
Terry Franson and Marty Villanueva
Absent: Ilean Ochoa, Diana Williams,Nancy Gibson, Heath Hamilton
Called to Order at 7:20 p.m.
Public Comment: Rebecca Mejia of"Miss Azusa Outstanding Teen", a Gladstone H.S.
student came the HRC meeting to let us know of her platform
"Embracing our Differences." She said she believes in the HRC's mission of
equality and justice and told us that she will be going to the State Competition with
this platform. She said that she is aware of the hate crime statistics in our city
regarding Blacks and Latinos and bullying by Whites. She was asked about the teen
groups on the public school campuses and said she was aware that they existed but
had not yet connected with them. When asked about the teen competition she said it
is based on academics, talent, interview, poise, elegance and athletic and evening
wear.
I. There was a move made to accept the Armenian Genocide Resolution by
Logan. Terry seconded the motion.
II. There was a move made to accept the proclamation for Matt Visser. Paul
seconded the motion.
III. Youth Conference discussion: We think that teachers should be
invited to participate. We will need the food to be donated. We are expecting
150 to 200 people. Terry said that he will take care of the drinks. We are
hoping to have a drama performance led by Mark Gable of Gladstone H.S.
IV. Current events: Jesus Lozano did not show up for meeting as planned
V. Youth Art Recognition Dinner: We decided to seek live entertainment from
the schools as well as another guest. We will need RSVP's for the Dinner.
Marty will contact teachers and students. We will need the food, drinks and
dessert donated.
VI. Hotline activated with message. See if we can get a link on the city website.
VII. Future themes and monthly dedications: Senior Citizens, Immigrants and
Homosexuality/Homophobia. Albert Tovar, director of the City Library, is
very supportive of our exhibits thus far. He said the feedback from the public
has been very positive.
