E-7
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL VIA:
SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER
FROM: ANN GRAF, DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND LIBRARY
SERVICES
DATE: JANUARY 18, 2022
SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF “PROJECT LAB” GRANT FROM THE CALIFORNIA STATE
LIBRARY
BACKGROUND:
The Azusa City Library has been awarded a grant in the amount of $17,050 from the California State
Library, Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). This action accepts this grant award and
approves a corresponding budget amendment to incorporate the grant funds into the current fiscal year
budget.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends that the City Council take the following actions:
1)Accept the LSTA Grant award from the California State Library; and
2)Approve necessary budget amendments and adjust the current fiscal year budget accordingly.
ANALYSIS:
The Library is the recipient of a LSTA Grant. The Azusa City Library is introducing a “Project Lab”
program series. Through Project Lab, the Library will support project-based learning through access to
supplies, materials and technology instruction through software classes. According to the California
Department of Education, project-based learning supports 21st century skills by promoting critical
thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. The Library’s role in facilitating this process will
be to make the necessary print, art, and technology resources available so that students can thrive during
the learning process and not be hindered by a lack of costly supplies or technology skills. Library staff
will further contribute to the development of students lifelong learning skills by introducing them to
various Microsoft and web based software for projects and presentations.
