HomeMy WebLinkAboutE-7 Staff Report - Project Lab Grant acceptance 21-22CONSENT ITEM E-7 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER FROM: ANN GRAF, DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND LIBRARY SERVICES DATE: JANUARY 18, 2022 SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF “PROJECT LAB” GRANT FROM THE CALIFORNIA STATE LIBRARY BACKGROUND: The Azusa City Library has been awarded a grant in the amount of $17,050 from the California State Library, Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). This action accepts this grant award and approves a corresponding budget amendment to incorporate the grant funds into the current fiscal year budget. RECOMMENDATIONS: Staff recommends that the City Council take the following actions: 1)Accept the LSTA Grant award from the California State Library; and 2)Approve necessary budget amendments and adjust the current fiscal year budget accordingly. ANALYSIS: The Library is the recipient of a LSTA Grant. The Azusa City Library is introducing a “Project Lab” program series. Through Project Lab, the Library will support project-based learning through access to supplies, materials and technology instruction through software classes. According to the California Department of Education, project-based learning supports 21st century skills by promoting critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. The Library’s role in facilitating this process will be to make the necessary print, art, and technology resources available so that students can thrive during the learning process and not be hindered by a lack of costly supplies or technology skills. Library staff will further contribute to the development of students lifelong learning skills by introducing them to various Microsoft and web based software for projects and presentations. APPROVED CITY COUNCIL 1/18/2022 Acceptance of LSTA Grant January 18, 2022 Page Two FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended actions; this grant will support the “Project Lab” series of programs. Upon Council acceptance of the grant, Finance staff will amend the FY 21-22 budget consistent with the grant award amount.
