TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER
FROM: TALIKA M. JOHNSON, DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES
DATE: SEPTEMBER 19, 2022
SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA CITIES WORKFORCE HEALTH
WELLNESS GRANT
BACKGROUND:
The City of Azusa is committed to the health and well-being of its employees. A healthy, productive
workforce is vital to a city’s success. When cities improve employee health and safety, they see
impressive results: fewer sick days, lower employee turnover, and a better safety record. Other
improvements can be less obvious but even more important: better focus, higher performance, and a
positive work attitude. Together, these changes create a powerful business advantage. Therefore, Azusa
Human Resources applied for the Cities for Workforce Health Wellness Grant, a competitive grant, and
has been awarded the maximum of $5,000.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Council take the following action:
1)Accept the Cities for Workforce Health Wellness Grant in the amount of $5,000.
ANALYSIS:
Cities for Workforce Health, through the partnership of the League of California Cities, Kaiser
Permanente, and Keenan & Associates helps cities, and their employees build a culture of health and
make enhanced health and productivity a reality at the workplace. The Azusa Human Resources Team
has begun the outline for a comprehensive Wellness Program plan, consisting of classes, activities,
tutorials, and friendly competitions focusing on the whole employee (body, mind, and spirit), with topics
covering physical, mental, and financial health and to promote a healthy work-life balance.

Acceptance of Cities for Workforce Health Wellness Grant
September 19, 2022
Page 2
Only five (5) California cities are recipients of the Wellness Grant: Salinas, Santa Barbara, Tracy,
Tulare, and Azusa. Acceptance of the $5,000 award signifies the City’s commitment to maintaining the
healthiest workforce in service to the Azusa Community. The Azusa Wellness Program will involve
collaboration across all city departments, incorporate the unique talents and skills of staff members who
exhibit “wellness behaviors”, and garner support and partnerships from organizations that can contribute
to the cause.
The grant serves as an initial contribution to the developing Program, and although not required as a
condition of the grant, will require some future financial commitment from the City – which will be
requested through the annual budget process. However, the benefit of a well implemented Wellness
Program far outweighs the minimal financial commitment required to run the Program.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The grant award is $5,000 and will be reserved in a special account for use of Wellness Program
activities.
