MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF
THE CITY COUNCIL
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2021 6:30 P.M.
The City Council of the City of Azusa, met in Special Session at the above date and time in the Azusa Auditorium located
at 213 E. Foothill Blvd, Azusa, CA 91702.
Mayor Gonzales called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chief Bertelsen.
A. ROLL CALL: Roll call was taken by City Clerk Cornejo.
Councilmember Macias was present via teleconference.
PRESENT: COUNCILMEMBERS: GONZALES, ALVAREZ, AVILA, MENDEZ
ABSENT: COUNCILMEMBERS: NONE
ALSO PRESENT
Elected Officials: City Clerk Cornejo.
Staff Members: City Manager Gonzalez, City Attorney Martinez, Deputy City Manager De Anda-Scaia, Director of
Administrative Services Johnson, Director of Community Resources Carpenter, Chief of Police Bertelsen, and Chief
Deputy City Clerk Garcia.
B. PUBLIC COMMENT
Philip Savoldi spoke on options related to the vacancy and how he believes should be filled.
C. SCHEDULED ITEMS
1. DISCUSSION OF CALIFORNIA GOVERNMENT CODE, SECTION 36512 AND OPTIONS REGARDING
CITY COUNCIL VACANCY.
City Clerk Cornejo and Chief Deputy City Clerk Garcia provided an overview of the staff report with options
regarding City Council Vacancy.
City Council held a discussion and staff answered related questions.
It was consensus of the City Council with Option 2. Appoint a qualified individual to fill the seat within the 60-
day period and then hold an election to fill the seat at the next regular municipal election in November 2022.
At that election the voters would select an individual to serve the remainder of the term.
City Council held a discussion on the appointment process.
It was consensus of the City Council to open an Application process with a deadline of Wednesday, October
6, 2021 at 5:30 P.M. and to hold a Special City Council Meeting Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at 6:30 P.M.
to hold interviews or to narrow down applications if more than 8 applications are received.

None.
E. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned by consensus of the City Council.
