E-8
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER
FROM: MIKE GUADAGNINO, DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
DATE: SEPTEMBER 18, 2023
SUBJECT: REQUEST TO APPROVE PURCHASE OF UNITRENDS BACKUP APPLIANCES
AND CLOUD STORAGE FROM PIVOTAL DATA SOLUTIONS
BACKGROUND:
The City currently uses Unitrends Backup Appliances and Cloud storage for all of our data backups. Due
to the growth of our infrastructure and data retention requirements we need to expand the amount of
storage available for data protection and recovery. The addition of 2 new onsite storage appliances and
the additional cloud storage will triple our current capacity. This purchase is necessary to meet our current
needs and will ensure the investment we make will serve our long-range goals as well.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends that the City Council take the following actions:
1)Waive the competitive bidding process as authorized under Azusa Municipal Code section 2-
517(38) Solicitation and Bidding exceptions; Computers, Computer Components; and
2)Approve the purchase of (2) Unitrends Recovery Series Appliance Bundle Model R90605 with
Unitrends Cloud Service Subscription for a total of $189,979.13
ANALYSIS:
The City adheres to the industry standard backup practice referred to as the 3-2-1 backup strategy. This
states that you should have 3 copies of your data on 2 different media types with 1 copy off-site for disaster
recovery. In order to meet this standard, the City utilizes the Unitrends Backup and Recovery appliances
along with the Unitrends Cloud Service. Due to the increasing growth of our critical production data, we
require additional storage to keep up with current as well as long range goals for data protection. This
solution will triple the amount of storage capacity for on-premise and cloud backups.
