HomeMy WebLinkAboutE.15 - Staff Report - ALA Grant Acceptance FY 2526CONSENT ITEM E-15 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL VIA: SERGIO GONZALEZ, CITY MANAGER FROM: LEILA HASSEN, CITY LIBRARIAN DATE: JULY 21, 2025 SUBJECT: AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION GRANT ACCEPTANCE BACKGROUND: The Azusa City Library has been awarded an American Library Association Building Capacity grant in the amount of $10,000 to support the Inspired Citizenship program. RECOMMENDATION: Staff Recommends that the City Council take the following action: 1)Accept the $10,000 grant award from the American Library Association. ANALYSIS: The Azusa City Library is the recipient of an American Library Association (ALA) Building Library Capacity Grant for New Americans, Immigrants, and Refugees. This grant provides funding for facilitation and materials related to the Adult Literacy Inspired Citizenship program at the Azusa City Library and offsite locations in Azusa, including Azusa Unified School District campuses, and other community partner venues. The Inspired Citizenship program includes Civics instruction, mock interviews, one-on-one and group tutoring sessions provided by Adult Literacy staff and volunteer tutors, as well as naturalization orientation and N-400 application clinics provided by community partner organizations. These funds will also support activities that empower newly naturalized citizens to further their education, seek better employment opportunities, obtain a U.S. Passport, register to vote, and become more involved in the community. Approved City Council July 21, 2025 Canyon City Foundation Grant July 21, 2025 Page 2 FISCAL IMPACT: There is no General Fund fiscal impact associated with the recommended action. This grant will support the operation of the Library’s Inspired Citizenship program. Upon Council acceptance of the grant, Finance staff will increase the FY 2025/26 budget by the grant award amount under account 28-30-511-164.
