HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - January 3, 1999 - CCCITY OF AZUSA MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING SUNDAY, JANUARY 3,1999 -2:00 P.M. The City Council of the City of Azusa met in Special session at the above date and time at Center Middle School in the City of Azusa. Captain Karen Pihlak of the Azusa Police Department called the meeting to order. Call to Order ROLL CALL PRESENT: COUNCILMEMBERS: HARDISON, STANFORD, ROCHA, ABSENT: COUNCILMEMBERS: BEEBE, MADRID ALSO PRESENT: C3 Captain Pihlak, Police Officer Montague, Esther Gutierrez of the Police Department, Deputy City Clerk Toscano. Approximately 10 Day Laborers of the area of Russell/Pasadena/Gladstone streets and Approximately 8 residents of the surrounding area. Captain Pihlak welcomed all and announced that the purpose of the meeting was to elect representatives of the Day Laborers to be the spokespersons from the areas of Gladstone/Azusa, Pasadena/Gladstone and Gladstone/Cerritos. She then announced that there would be a meeting with residents in the area on Saturday, January 23rd, at Center Middle School. She thanked all for attending the meeting and for the commitment to the issues. Roll Call Also Present Welcome/ purpose 'Councilmember Rocha thanked the Day Laborers in attendance for cleaning up the area at Rocha Gladstone/Pasadena/Russell, noting that there has been much improvement, no trash, no thanks complaints, etc. Mr. Juan Leyva, a Day Laborer, addressed those in attendance stating that he had just come J. Leyva from cleaning up the park and requested that the residents in the area have respect for them comments and vice versa. Another gentleman of the Day Laborer group expressed his disappointment that more Day Laborers did not attend the meeting and requested that the 11 a.m. curfew for standing and waiting for work be extended. Discussion was held regarding 11 a.m. curfew, citations being issued to contractors for Discussion parking violations, another meeting to elect Day Labor representatives, (Thursday, January 7, 1999, Officer Tom Montague would go out and obtain the representative names). Other discussion included the Day Laborers wanting to police themselves, residents expressed their appreciation that there has been improvement in the area but their property values have dropped, Day Laborers advised that they just want to work, suggestion to move to industrial area, car polling and other agencies, minimum wage, legality of hiring of Day Laborers, and agencies versus street jobs. It was then noted that the process will be slow and options for solutions would be discussed comments at another meeting. ' It was consensus of Council to adjourn. TIME OF AD�JOURNMEN :3:00 P.M.
